Why Buy? 7 Things You Did Not Know You Could Rent

Why buy when you can rent?

Cars, folding chair, and wedding tents are among things you can rent, and people have been doing that for decades. If you’re a woman, you can now rent dresses, which is great if you’re attending an event and you don’t want to spend money on a brand new gown.

In fact, nowadays, online companies as well as independent entrepreneurs are constantly increasing the number of things you can rent instead of buy. In most cases, the rental period is flexible, not to mention that renting will save money.

There are many reasons why you should rent an instrument, tool, or stunning dress instead of paying the purchase price. You may not want to be limited to just one type of strapless maxi dress or circular saw. Or perhaps you need to use the item only once.

Then there’s also the idea of reducing the clutter in your house, garage, or attic. The more things are rented and reused, the less they are purchased and discarded.

Without further ado, here are some things you can rent!

1. Power tools

The first entry on our list of things you can rent are power tools. It’s common practice for consumers to rent a carpet cleaner from a local Lowe’s or Home Depot, but what many people don’t know is that you can rent many other power tools as well.

For example, if you’re going to use that tile saw only once, you should rent it instead of purchasing it. Even tools you use once a year for home improvement projects won’t likely stay in good condition, so it makes sense to rent them.

Lowe’s and Home Depot have a wide range of things you can rent—which can be pretty expensive to buy—and they always come with expert advice on how to use them.

Not only will you save money by renting tools, but you also won’t have to worry that they don’t work or need to be refilled or replaced. That’s because they are always in good shape.

For example, at a Home Depot in Durham, North Carolina, a pressure washer costs $58 for four hours or $83 per day, while a cordless paint sprayer is $25 for four hours or $36 for the day.

2. Pickup truck for quick jobs

This is definitely one of the best things you can rent! Instead of paying the additional cost to get a bed or couch delivered or hiring a moving company to haul your furniture, think about renting a truck. Or you could hit up your truck-owning friends, but you can do that only so many times.

You can rent a truck from Home Depot for $19 for the first 75 minutes. If you need it for a whole day, you’ll have to pay $129, while renting it for a week is $903. At Lowe’s, you’ll pay $19 for 90 minutes or $119 all day.

3. A coffin from a funeral home

Next on our list of things you can rent is a coffin. This is a thing that is most definitely used only once. Since the average retail price for a casket goes from $2,000 up to $10,000, coffin rentals can be a big money-saver.

Most funeral homes will charge about $1,000 to rent a casket, but keep in mind that salespeople don’t always tell customers that the service is available. After all, their top priority is to sell. This being said, you may need to ask them if they offer any rental options.

When a customer rents the coffin for a loved one, a wooden box is placed inside so it holds the body in the interior of the casket. The box is ultimately lowered into the ground, and the coffin can be rented again.

4. Camping gear and other sports equipment

Camping and sports gear are also among the things you can rent. This is a great and economical option for families with children involved in high-end sports. Seasonal sports stuff like golf clubs and skis is pretty expensive to purchase, and considering you use the equipment only a few months out of the year, it does make sense to rent.

There are many peer-to-peer platforms that offer this service. You can find many things you can rent, from snowboards and tennis rackets to folding bikes and more, in locations across the country. For example, outdoors outfitter REI rents camping gear and other sports equipment in addition to selling them at its palatial stores.

REI is a co-op, and customers can pay a one-time fee of $20 to receive a small ownership stake, which comes with several benefits. Although membership isn’t required to rent, it may be more cost-effective to pay the $20 to join and receive lower rental fees.

If you don’t want to rent, you may want to check out Amazon camping gear options, as they are often pretty accessible.

5. Work attire, designer dresses, and casual clothes

No. 5 on our list of things you can rent is clothing. Renting it has become so popular; by paying a monthly fee, you can now have a high-quality wardrobe delivered to your house regularly. Most clothing rental services also offer the option to rent accessories such as jewelry and handbags.

Rent the Runway is one of the most popular clothing rental companies, giving women the chance to sport designer clothes for a fraction of the price of buying them. From a Badgley Mischka floral that sells for $900 to a $1,400 Valentino embroidered full-length gown, the elegant options are plentiful, along with attire for weekends, work, clubbing, and outdoor activities.

Rent the Runway offers multiple subscription plans: for $94, you can rent five items per month; for 10 items per month, you’ll have to pay $104 for the first month, then $144 per month thereafter; for 15 items per month, the monthly fee is $149 for the first two months and then $193 starting with the following month.

6. Men’s clothing

Who said men couldn’t wear expensive threads without paying for them at the retail price? Yes, if you’re a man, clothing also makes the list of things you can rent. There are many clothing rental companies that offer men the chance to wear clothing for special occasions they can’t afford on a regular basis.

For example, Taelor is a subscription service that also includes styling support for men. Costumers pay either $79 per month for one shipment, each with up to five items of clothing, or $109 per month for two shipments, each with five pieces of clothing. According to the company, each box contains about $800 worth of clothes.

7. Handbags

Last but not least on our list of things you can rent are handbags. Whether you want a stunning bag for a special occasion or just to add some variety to your day-to-day outfit, renting could be the way to go. It’s definitely more affordable than buying one!

Bag Borrow or Steal is one of the multiple ways you can rent a designer purse. You can have the bag for one month, and you don’t pay for the shipping.

Options include a quilted Chanel tote for $400, a Prada envelope bag with a gold chain for $100, a small Gucci disco bag for $125, and many more. If you were to purchase these, they’d run from $1,000 to $5,000.

Another handbag rental site is Luxury Fashion Rentals, which has similar policies and prices.
