Did You Know These Celebrities Are Quite Frugal?
When we think of celebrities, we automatically assume they live a lavish, very expensive life. Some of them yes, they might in fact spend their time throwing away their money left and right on designer clothes, and glorious mansions.
There are so many sad tales of celebrities who went broke simply because they blew it all on candelabras and diamond sinks. But today we’re not here to talk about them. We are here to talk about the exceptions.
Because yes, some celebrities are quite thrifty, as they manage their money well and do not blow it on gaudy and ornate nonsense. They also prefer leading more modest lives than some of their colleagues. Here’s a list of them and how they organize their expenses like normal people (or close enough).
Tyra Banks
Former supermodel Tyra Banks declared that she always preferred saving money to spending it. She even credited her mother for teaching her how to be more savvy with her finances and introducing her to a money manager when she was only 19.
In the end, her accountants recommended spending money on at least a bunch of ridiculous and unnecessary stuff, otherwise, her money would go straight to the IRS. “Now, in hindsight, I should have bought art and things that are appreciated,” she explained. She recalls getting private planes and regretting this decision.
Dave Grohl
The Foo Fighters are probably one of the most popular bands in the world. However, frontman Dave Grohl hasn’t really picked up the spending habits of other well-known rock stars. He even told the Guardian that when he was 12 years old, he saw his mother suffering from a stroke while she was doing the family’s taxes.
He recalls how much of a mark the event left on him, and ever since them, he got the feeling that money might kill you. After all, people spend their entire lives dying inside only because of money. But now, despite hitting the jackpot with his very popular band, he still lives a frugal life, preferring to put his money in the bank rather than blowing it on Faberge’s eggs.
Sarah Jessica Parker
As it turns out, Sarah Jessica Parker leads her life completely the opposite way her character from “Sex and the City” does. In reality, she’s not a Blahnik-crazed fashionista like Bradshaw. In fact, she’s not the type to blow $945 on a pair of pumps.
It’s just not her style. She even explained that’s just how she was brought up, and that she wants to keep the tradition with her own children. She even recalled how 100% of her son’s T-shirts are used, and that he enjoys buying his items at thrift shops. Her daughter wears hand-me-downs, and that they are very comfortable with the idea of passing down clothes in their family for three generations.
Zooey Deschanel
Actor Zooey Deschanel doesn’t like the idea of living a lavish life, and she even has the legal documents to prove it. During her 2012 divorce from musician Ben Gibbard, the court papers became available to the public.
They also included all her financial details, which listed an average monthly income of $95,000 and assets going far beyond $3 million, which also include cash, stocks, and bonds. Her spending incorporates only 25% of her income, and her credit cards have zero balance. Assuming Deschanel kept exercising with great restraint, we commend her on living well with her means.
Jay Leno
Comedian Jay Leno always preferred living a frugal life, and he stayed that way even after he earned millions of dollars hosting “The Tonight Show.” In his younger years, when he was struggling to become a standup comedian, he decided to add to his income a couple of bucks by working at a car dealership.
Leno decided to spend only his comedy money, and banking larger amounts of money that he earned from the dealership. He kept doing this during the “Tonight Show” years, only spending the smallest income from standup dates and banking his television salary. “I’ve never touched a dime of my ‘Tonight Show’ money.”
Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence made a ton of money off her involvement in the $1.6 billion “Hunger Games” movie franchise, to such a degree that you would even think she would treat herself to a bit of the high life. But, as it turns out, she doesn’t.
The actor is worth $160 million, and still shops at discount stores and engages in the act of clipping coupons. She even recalled how she still looks for bargains when shopping at the market.
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Speaking of clipping coupons, Sarah Michelle Gellar loves clipping coupons. As a matter of fact, she avidly participates in this kind of pursuit, speaking credibly and quite authoritatively about her habit. “One time I remember being in Bloomingdale’s and they had these coupons – Bloomingdale’s has great coupons – and I was taking them all out for holiday shopping.”
She also recalled how someone behind her turned around and stated that they couldn’t believe how long she was taking to shop. Someone even asked her why she’s using coupons, and she answered that there’s no point in paying more if there are coupons available.
Halle Berry
The Oscar-winning actor Halle Berry was raised alongside her sister by a divorced mother who decided to singlehandedly take care of both of them. Even if she found great success in her adulthood as an actor, her teenage years left quite an impression on her.
That’s why, ever since then, she’s always been careful with the way she spends her money and very aware of all the nasty habits of celebrities when it comes to finances. She is extremely thankful for her good fortune, but one of her greatest fears is that she can easily lose everything.
“I’m not really someone who has to have ten cars and too many diamonds,” she added. She prefers saving a lot because she is always worried that her career could easily come to an end.
Warren Buffett
According to Bloomberg, Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO Warren Buffett has a brand new net worth of $137 billion. With this amount of money in mind, you would think he would have moved into a huge mansion many years ago.
But in reality, he still lives in the same house he bought for only $31,500 in 1958. The “Oracle of Omaha” doesn’t like going to fancy dinners, and he spends less than four dollars on his favorite breakfast, which is an egg and cheese biscuit.
Carrie Underwood
Singer Carrie Underwood first appeared on the scene after winning “American Idol” in 2005, and ever since then, she’s had quite a successful career. She even told Oprah Winfrey in one of her interviews that she still likes doing her own laundry rather than handing the responsibility off to some underling.
“That’s what I do on my days off,” the singer explained. “We go to the laundromat. I get my quarters, and we do our laundry. I just don’t like other people doing it. It freaks me out.”
