You Can Still Have Fun While Being Frugal! Here Are 7 Ways

October 9, 2023 · Budgeting

Can you have fun while being frugal? Of course!

I was at my house the other day with two old friends whom I hadn’t seen in a while. We obviously talked about a bunch of stuff, and at some point, all three of us started complaining about how everything got so expensive these days.

Honestly, the topic of money seems to be on most people’s lips. In a situation like this where energy and grocery bills get so high, one must prioritize expenditures and choose which are needs and which are wants.

Obviously, the fun stuff is one of the first things that one will give up to make sure the money goes toward paying for essential things. And that’s how my friends and I came to the conclusion that you can still have fun while being frugal.

For example, one of my friends has ADHD and therefore finds it difficult to stay at home all day during the weekend. She needs to get out and do stuff, but she doesn’t want to spend money as her budget doesn’t allow it.

That’s why I’ve decided to do some research to find some fun, frugal ways to spend your free time without feeling guilty that you’ve spent money. This being said, here’s how you can have fun while being frugal!

1. Volunteer for a cause you love

Whether you’re looking for ideas to have fun while being frugal or affordable ways to spread generosity, volunteering is a wonderful all-weather activity. It may not be among the first things that come to mind when you think of fun activities that don’t require money, but there are lots of organizations that can use your help right now.

To find the ones in your area, use a volunteer website to search for opportunities, or ask at a local nonprofit, such as a wildlife rehabilitation center or a food bank. You could make new friends, develop new skills, and feel good about helping animals or other people.

2. Go on a picnic

Another idea to have fun while being frugal is to go on a picnic with friends or family. You can go to your favorite outdoor spot or use it as an occasion to explore someplace new.

While you’ll spend some money on food and drinks, you definitely won’t spend as much as you would if you were to eat at a restaurant. In fact, if you already have something cooked and some crackers bought from the store, you’ll just have to bring something to drink, and that’s it!

If you live in a big city, here’s an idea that I’ve found: Pull up your maps apps on your phone and look for green patches around your area. Then, search the name of the place in the browser and click to see the pictures.

3. Leverage your chamber of commerce

Another way to have fun while being frugal is to attend free events. Many cities and towns offer no-cost music nights, festivals, and other cultural events.

If you’re wondering which events are about to be held, check out the website for your local chamber of commerce and write them down, or better yet, add them to your calendar.

Taking advantage of these events is an easy way to have fun while being frugal, and you get to also socialize with your friends, mix up your activities on evenings out, and enjoy your hometown—all without opening your wallet.

You’ll like it so much that you’ll be looking forward to going to the next event!

4. Visit a farmers market

Next on our list of ways to have fun while being frugal is to visit a farmers market. Perusing the wares and produce at your local farmers market can be a nice (and free!) way to spend a weekend day. Plus, these events often have lots of free samples to try.

If those delicious samples have you wanting to pull out some cash from your pocket, there’s no need to stress: cooking at home is even cheaper than eating out on a budget. Farmers markets are packed with affordable, fresh produce, especially if you head to one at the end of the day when vendors are more willing to give discounts to get rid of extra merchandise.

5. Check out books from the library

Reading a book has always been a lovely way to have fun while being frugal. Visiting your local library and reading books there is a great activity, as you don’t have to spend money. You may be surprised by how accommodating libraries can be, even if your local branch is a small space.

For instance, if you’re interested in reading a book that you can’t find on the shelves, most libraries are willing to order it for you. Moreover, many libraries are full of even more fun stuff to do that doesn’t require spending money, like checking out cameras, binoculars, or DVDs.

Going to the library versus downloading content on your smartphone or tablet can also become an opportunity for the family to get out of the house.

6. Go bird-watching

Another idea to have fun while being frugal is to go bird-watching. Even if you’re not a bird expert, if you like spending time in nature, bird watching could turn into a new hobby and be among your growing list of interesting activities that don’t require money.

If you like it, you could make a checklist of all the birds you’ve seen and learn more about them. What’s great about birds is that you can find them wherever you are, even in the biggest of cities.

All you need is some binoculars (here are some options from Amazon) and a bird book or app to get started. See how many birds you can discover in your hometown!

7. Go camping

Another way to have fun while being frugal is to go on a camping trip. When you’re looking for fun activities that don’t require money, you should consider finding an outdoor adventure. It’s true that some campgrounds charge fees, but it’s possible to find free sites.

For example, you can camp on most national forest land and don’t pay anything. It’s called dispersed camping, but keep in mind that you may have to follow certain rules, such as being a specific distance away from developed campgrounds and water sources.

And no, camping isn’t realistic just for people living in rural areas, as you can find dispersed camping areas and other campsites with minimal fees near many big cities. The best thing you can do if you’re interested in this idea is to check with your regional or local US Forest Service, State Parks office, or Bureau of Land Management before heading out.

Takeaway

There are many ways to have fun while being frugal, so entertaining yourself doesn’t have to mean constantly spending money on outings and events. Sometimes it’s the simplest activities that are the most memorable and enjoyable. Whether you need to rework your budget to focus on other priorities or need to save some money for the short term, these seven staycation ideas will help you find fun and new things to do without spending money.
