Having a pet can be a true joy, but it is also a big responsibility. You need to take care of your friend, and because of this, we have a few hacks to lower pet care costs.

Generally, the cost of pet care can get a little bit over the top, but there are a few things that can help you. In today’s economy, you might find it almost impossible to take your cat, dog, or any other pet to the vet, even for annual checkups. This is especially true if you are a retiree.

Even though caring for a pet is an expense, this doesn’t mean that it has to be expensive. And this is why we want to tell you about some tips that will help you lower pet care costs. Are you ready to find out more?

1. Better food

If you are a frugal person, there is a high chance that you are always trying to get everything at the most affordable price. This is amazing, and we are sure that in this way you have saved a lot of money.

We know that generally, a lower price is not necessarily equal to a lower quality, but this is no longer true when we speak about pet food. In this case, better-quality food will make you take more money out of your pocket.

Maybe you are not a big fan of this idea, but hear us out when we tell you that feeding your pet high-quality food is the best thing you can do for their health. Pets that eat only good-quality food live longer and are healthier. And you know what this means?

You’ve guessed it! It means fewer vet visits! And this means more money for you to save. Sometimes you can find good-quality food at fair prices. All you have to do is read the label carefully and choose foods that are high in protein. Keep this in mind, and try to avoid corn as much as possible. Also, remember to carefully read the feeding instructions.

2. How to lower pet care costs: Create your own toys

If you have a furry friend, you know that they love to play. At least most of them do, especially when they are small. And because of this, you will need to give them some toys. These accessories are something that every pet owner needs, and unfortunately, some of them can get quite pricey.

But you don’t need to buy pet toys in order to have pet toys. Yes, it might sound weird, but it is actually simple to understand. You can make your own pet toys, and this is for sure one effective way to lower pet care costs.

Can you remember that sock whose pair mysteriously vanished? Yes, that one. Grab it, put some catnip in it, make a knot, and give it to your cat. Or those old bed sheets you are not using anymore. Cut it into long and thinner pieces, brief them, and make your own tug toy that is also machine washable.

It is not that hard to make your own toys. This is a win-win scenario. You will save money, and your pet will definitely be happy!

3. Groom your pet at home

If you want to lower the cost of pet care, then you definitely know that grooming might be a problem. And we say this because, depending on what pet you have, grooming can cost you a fortune.

If your dog or cat has a long coat, the grooming prices can go as high as $50 per month! This can be too much for many people. Hopefully, you can save money on grooming by giving your pet a bath or cutting their “nails” at home.

First of all, you need to have a good shampoo that is appropriate for your pet. Next, make sure to have a good brush and some scissors. Sometimes, if your pet has a longer coat, you might need to trim it a little bit.

For nails, you need to be careful because you don’t want to cut too deep. We advise you to search for a tutorial on YouTube before performing this action.

Even if you are able to groom your pet at home, keep in mind that there are some practices that should only be performed by a specialist. One of them is the anal gland expression that needs to be done in small-breed dogs.

4. For the next vaccination, try a shot clinic

If you have a pet, you know that vaccination is mandatory. This is a step you shouldn’t miss, but sometimes you might find out that you don’t have enough money for it. And what are you going to do? We know that you want to keep your pet healthy, and this is why we want to share this trick with you. Keep in mind that this is a great way to lower pet care costs.

There are many veterinarians who sometimes open shot clinics for the community. For example, one such clinic can be opened in your local feed store.

Usually, the prices are significantly lower if you compare them to the ones you pay when you take your pet to the doctor’s office. The annual shots, including the rabies one, can cost you somewhere around $30. If you were to get your pet vaccinated in a doctor’s office, you would have paid up to $100.

If you think that you can handle it, there are some pet stores that will sell you the shots to DIY at home. Even if you want to do this, we think it is better to have the certificate from a vet, so we advise you to take them to a professional.

5. Save money on flea treatments

Let’s say that you use monthly flea treatments such as Frontline Plus. This is an efficient one, and most vets use it. But if you go to the vet, you will pay $20 per dose. Do this every month, and you will spend $240 in a year. Maybe this doesn’t sound like a lot, but did you know that if you buy them online, you can lower pet care costs?

You can find many flea treatments online for incredible prices. For example, you can find them on Amazon for $30 for a three-month pack. This is a fantastic price! So, next time, before going to the vet, you might want to check what you can find online.

6. Try to reduce the initial expenses

For example, you can rescue a puppy for $120. And for this money, you will get all the basics a young pup needs, such as a microchip, spay or neuter, the first round of shots, the license, and a free check-up.

Most dogs need training, but you might think that training is quite expensive. Hopefully, with the right information, you can train your dog yourself. This is an amazing book that can help you train your pup: Positive Training for Reactive Dogs, and you can buy it from Amazon.

Use Craigslist to find crates, scratching posts, and other basic items. People usually give them for free or at half the initial price.
