If your goal is to be frugal and healthy, then it is better to stay away from these items:

Everyone has done it. You enter the grocery shop with a little list of necessities but leave with a trunk full of purchases and a lengthy receipt. That’s not good, especially if you want to be more frugal and healthy.

In these times of rising prices, finding ways to cut down on expenses has become more crucial than ever before. That’s why it’s essential to explore every available opportunity that can help you save money.

So no matter how pressed for time you are, if you’re looking to be more frugal and healthy you’ll be interested in reading the following lines. For my favorite readers, I’ve compiled a list of things you should never purchase from grocery shops based on my extensive study and conversations with a few shopping gurus.

Frozen dinners

Frozen pre-made products are convenient for sure, but on the other hand, they’re also high in preservatives and sodium. If you want to be frugal and healthy, I’d recommend steering clear of these items. Plus, if you see an overstocked freezer, be aware because it can be a sign of strained cooling units, which means that the food isn’t stored at optimal temperatures.

Look in the fridge and check the temperature before buying any frozen items. The best temperatures are always under 40 degrees Fahrenheit. One more thing before moving on to the next item that you should never buy is that cooking a meal from scratch tends to be more fulfilling than these frozen meals. It is also a cheaper and healthier option to cook in large quantities and freeze portions. This works wonders for me and my family!

Pre-cut vegetables

How many times were you tempted to buy already-cut produce? While it can be super convenient, this might not be the best idea. I will tell you why. First of all, pre-cut food may serve as a haven for pathogenic germs because you will never know what utensils were used to cut it in the first place. Were they clean? Were they used to cut meat as well? We will never know.

If you want to be frugal and healthy, consider taking an hour or so to cut your produce in your kitchen. Besides being super safe for you and your family’s health, you will also save quite a lot of money since in most stores, including the discount ones, you can pay around $3 or $4 for an 8-ounce container of diced produce. That’s a no-no, for sure!

Processed baked goods

Although those prepackaged cakes and cookies look delicious, they usually have trans fats, artificial flavors, and preservatives. Baking items from scratch tastes better and is healthier since there are no unnecessary ingredients.

Bottled salad dressings

Reliable as they are, bottled dressings may include high levels of sugar, salt, and preservatives. Instead of buying these dressings, better keep your money and customize the flavor to your preference when making your dressing.

Off-color foods

This must be a warning sign from the very beginning, especially for meat. Inspect for visible indicators of stuff like mold on bread or fruit, meat that has turned gray, or strange food-related colors or odors.

Look for these things even if the expiration date of the packages is unknown; they will expire in one week or so. If the products are weird-looking, then it’s probably because they weren’t kept at optimal temperatures, so they’ve gone bad.

Furthermore, make sure the packaging is also intact with no leaks or tears. And also, take a closer look at those who are handling the products. If they don’t wear gloves, I’d recommend staying away!

Packaged deli meats

While handy, packaged deli meats may contain excessive amounts of salt and preservatives. Make a healthier decision by selecting freshly sliced meats from the deli counter.

Unpasteurized dairy products

Raw milk has gained popularity on social media and is now available in several shops across the country, even though it is still banned in some areas. Because it may contain dangerous germs that can lead to a serious foodborne disease, making it unsafe for human consumption. For this reason, you need to limit your dairy purchases to pasteurized goods.

Microwave popcorn

Like packaged popcorn, microwave popcorn’s lining frequently includes chemicals and harmful fats. At-home air-popping kernels are simple, less expensive, and give you complete control over the toppings.

Marinated meat

Another item that you should never buy from grocery stores is the marinated meat. Marinated meats are excellent, but I would highly encourage you to avoid them. Sure, it’s great to buy something that doesn’t take hours of prep ahead of time, cleanup, or challenges.

You never know what kind of spices were used to marinade it, on top of the fact that it’s quite pricey compared to conventional meat. Additionally, they take this action to prolong the freshness of the meats, as the majority are getting close to expiration. That doesn’t sound very nice, does it?

…psst! Are you looking for some nice and durable shopping bags that won’t fail you when you need them the most? I have a better suggestion! Flavored yogurt

Flavored yogurt is so tasty; everybody loves it, but is it that healthy? Well, the answer is no. This type of yogurt contains a lot of sugar and additives, and opting for Greek yogurt is a better choice. Combine it with your favorite fruits and nuts, and voila, you have a healthy, delicious, and highly nutritious snack for less money!

Non-dairy creamers

I bet you love a good cup of coffee first thing after you wake up. I am curious if you like it black or with milk or creamers. If you say creamers, I’ll suggest you reconsider. Besides being pretty expensive in most grocery stores, they are jam-packed with trans fats and a broad range of artificial substances. Opt for regular milk or plant-based milk if you are lactose intolerant.

Frozen pancakes

Why someone would purchase frozen pancakes is a mystery to me, mostly because pancakes are quite simple to make at home. If you’re looking to be more frugal and healthy, I suggest trying to make them at home because the recipe is super easy.

Make a large quantity on the weekend and store the leftovers in the freezer for the week. Each pancake will only cost you a couple of bucks.

Diet foods

I learned it the hard way, but foods advertised as “light” or “diet” may be misleading and include additional ingredients or artificial sweeteners. If you want to make sure the food you’re eating is healthy, opt for fresh produce and/or homemade food.

Mixed spices

Last but not least the things you should never buy from grocery stores are mixed spices. Additives, sugar, and salt are typically disguised in them. Instead of paying an overprice for these pre-made mixed spices, add your favorite ones in a jar and use them whenever you’re about to cook that delicious meal your family adores.
