grocery stores in New York

Can you guess which ones are the cheapest grocery stores in New York?

There is no point in denying that inflation has affected our lives, and this is reflected mostly in how expensive the food got! When you go to the grocery store once a week, you can easily see how the price has changed and it’s scary!

But fortunately, not every store was made equal and you have the opportunity to go to ones that offer friendly prices for their products. And selecting the supermarkets with the most affordable pricing is the first step in reducing your shopping expenses.

In this article, we’ve rounded up some of the most affordable grocery stores in New York, from local to international ones. By the end of the article, we expect to see a lot of you in the comments to tell us which ones are your favorites. Let’s start!

1. Trader Joe’s

Americans’ first go-to place when it comes to low-cost items is definitely Trader Joe’s! That’s why we wanted to put it first on the list of grocery stores in New York. What else is making this particular store one of the most popular ones in the entire country besides affordable prices? The return policy and the variety of their products. Trader Joe’s has so many snacks, frozen foods, and one of the best things: seasonal offerings for very low prices.

While there are a lot of people who dislike this store because it doesn’t have sales or coupons like other retailers, here you can buy discounted stuff all year round, which is a big plus in our book.

2. Lidl

This phenomenal German retailer, loved by everyone, is also present in New York City. Since the 1970s, Lidl has offered affordable food, and it is currently rapidly growing throughout the U.S. East Coast. Despite having fewer locations than Aldi, they constantly compete with one another to stock the least expensive foods.

Another thing that we like about Lidl is that in case a specific item doesn’t meet your expectations and you’re not satisfied with it, you can return it and get your money back or exchange it for something else that has the exact price. Cool, right?

Last year, Lidl was voted among the most affordable grocery stores in New York and became so popular that 8 out of 10 people go shopping there frequently.

3. Aldi

The cheapest groceries available are at Aldi, so if you haven’t bought there yet, you’re missing out. Seriously! Aldi is regarded as one of the nation’s most well-liked grocery stores, according to a variety of data. The German company’s business style is intended to keep costs low for the consumer, in addition to producing top-notch goods.

90% of the items on Aldi’s shelves, according to the retailer, are private-label goods. Using your grocery bags, paying a 25-cent returnable fee to use the shopping carts, and refraining from listening to music with a license on the overhead speakers all lower the store’s overhead expenses, which in turn keeps pricing low.

How often do you go shopping at Aldi?

4. WinCo Foods

The fourth place in our list of the cheapest grocery stores in New York is occupied by WinCo Foods. Besides being famous for keeping grocery prices as low as possible, WinCo Foods stores also have nice and kind staff who also have better salaries than other employees from other retailers. Now that’s something!

WinCo is one of those retailers that buys fresh produce straight from local farmers and manufacturers, so in their stores, the food is always going to be fresh. Fresh food at good prices? That’s amazing! At WinCo, you can also buy in bulk and store everything carefully in your pantry, and you will see that by comparison, prices here are way lower than most other low-cost retailers.

However, there is one small downside to buying at WinCo: you can’t pay by credit card.

Are you looking for some cute but strong reusable shopping bags that don’t cost a fortune? We got you! On Amazon, you can find a huge variety, but we picked our favorite ones that are also way cheaper than others. This 6-pack of reusable shopping bags costs only $13.99, and the 10-pack one is $16.99. Pick your favorite!

5. Whole Foods Market

Next up is definitely Whole Foods Market, another grocery store that stands still among the cheapest grocery stores in New York. There, you can find a plethora of items, starting with organic and healthy foods, at very good prices compared to other stores. According to the store itself, it upholds the industry’s finest quality standards and remains dedicated to sustainable agriculture.

If you value fresh and high-quality food, then don’t hesitate to go shopping at Whole Foods! Furthermore, if you’re not in a hurry and enjoy spending time in stores, we recommend checking out the Whole Foods market in Union Square. The view is cool, and the fresh food at the self-service is delicious. Stop by for soup, and you won’t regret it!

6. Westside Market

You have probably never heard of Westside Market if you are not from New York City. Westside is a family-run company with several outlets around the city. It is also, in my opinion, one of the cleanest and most well-kept shops in Manhattan, making it simple to locate whatever you need.

One small suggestion: check out on the internet because, in some of their locations, they do offer some fantastic lunch and dinner deals, and trust us when we say everything is delicious!

7. Fairway Market

Another New Yorkers’ favorite is Fairway. What began as a fruit and vegetable shop in Manhattan’s Upper West Side has developed into a full-fledged supermarket business and slowly became one of the most affordable grocery stores in New York.

Fairway has always been a family-run company and still adheres to its founding principles. From local farms and small vendors around the nation, you’ll be able to choose from a distinctive array of fresh and high-quality food alternatives. Low-cost produce and top-notch quality? We’re definitely in!

8. 99 Cents Only

There aren’t many supermarkets that offer pricing as low as 99 Cents Only Stores. Everything was supplied at the company’s launch for just 99 cents. Of course, circumstances have changed, and today the store’s name is rather misleading—you may occasionally pay more than 99 cents for goods there (but you may also occasionally pay less).

Even so, even though there are only four of these businesses at the moment, you can nearly always count on getting a fantastic price when you purchase there. Although it might occasionally be challenging to locate exactly what you’re searching for, you can buy here vegetables as well as a range of other food goods.

Positively, it’s kind of like a treasure hunt since you never know what you’ll get for cheap when you enter one of these shops. 99 Cents Only Stores surely provide an enjoyable shopping experience if you’re the type of person who is constantly looking for a good deal.

9. Gristedes

The latest of the grocery stores in New York on our list is Gristedes Supermarkets. For over a century, Gristedes has been a food provider in New York City. There are roughly ten Gristedes stores in Manhattan, and they are priced slightly lower than Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

For those looking for affordable grocery stores in New York, this particular one is an excellent option because it has a similar vibe to the neighborhood supermarkets from the old days in the city. You may find all your favorite shelf brands at Gristedes, as well as fresh produce, deli, and pre-packaged meals in some of the stores.
