Over the past few years, many grocery stores have started to eliminate specialized discounts for seniors. Moreover, grocery shopping can be an expense that is hard to cut. Fortunately, a few options remain across the country. If you’re 55 or older, you can actually save some big bucks on groceries.

With the use of coupons and store sales, you can significantly reduce the amount you spend at supermarkets. These money-saving grocery tips can be even more powerful if you’re able to combine them with a senior discount.

There are several grocery stores that offer senior discounts, many of which apply during certain days of the week or month. Also, not all locations offer the same promotions, so ask at your local supermarket to find out if senior discounts are available.

Without further ado, here are some grocery stores that offer senior discounts!

1. Albertsons

Next on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is Albertsons. The grocery chain offers a 10% discount for those age 55 and older. There are several participating stores around the country where the promotion is available, so it’s best to call ahead to confirm that your local store does offer this discount.

The states where the senior discount applies are Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Montana, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, Texas, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Most stores offer the senior discount on the first Wednesday of each month, but again, it’s best to call ahead to verify.

2. American Discount Foods

The first entry on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is American Discount Foods. Every Monday, the supermarket offers 10% off your entire purchase if you’re 62 or older. The promotion is only available in Arizona, and there are only two locations where you can take advantage of it.

In order to receive it, you need to show a valid ID at the payment place.

3. Bashas

Bashas is also among the grocery stores that offer senior discounts. On the first Wednesday of each month, customers age 55 and older can get an extra 10% off their purchases at the store. The promotion doesn’t apply to gift cards, prescriptions, tobacco products, alcoholic drinks, postage stamps, taxes, lottery tickets, fuel, or Western Union transactions.

The promotion is only available in Arizona and New Mexico, and you may be asked to present ID to show proof of age, as well as to use their Thank You Card to get the senior discount.

4. Bi-Lo

Next on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is Bi-Lo. Every Wednesday, customers age 60 and older can get an extra 5% discount if they fill out an online application at the store’s website beforehand.

Once they’re approved for the senior bonus card, they can start taking advantage of the promotion. Only people whose age is 60 or above are eligible for the senior bonus day.

The discount is available in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

5. Concord Food Co-Op

Another grocery store that offers a senior discount is Concord Food Co-Op. The promotion is available on both Tuesdays and Sundays, and you can get 15% off your purchase.

In order to take advantage of the discount, you need to be at least 62, have a current owner card, and fill out an application to show that you qualify.

The discount is available at two of the chain’s locations in New Hampshire.

6. Fred Meyer

Next on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is Fred Meyer. If you’re 55 and older, you can get 10% off on the first Tuesday of every month.

While the promotion applies to groceries and nutrition products that carry the chain’s private brand, which includes Fred Meyer, Simple Truth, Kroger, and others, the savings cannot be applied to certain clothing, shoes, accessories, electronics, and home products.

The senior discount is available in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

7. DeCicco Family Markets

Next on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is DeCicco Family Markets. At participating locations in New York, you can get a discount on regular-priced products if you’re 62 or older. In other words, the details of the promotion vary based on your location, so it’s best to talk to the staff at your local store to learn more.

In order to take advantage of the discount, you’ll be asked to register, have a DeCicco Preferred Card, and present an ID to show proof of age.

8. Fry’s Food

If you live in Arizona, chances are you do grocery shopping at Fry’s Food, which also makes the list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts. On the first Wednesday of each month, you can get 10% off your entire purchase if you’re 60 or older.

While Fry’s is part of the Kroger family of companies, it sets its own discount policies. The great thing is that there are 120+ locations in Arizona, so it’s easy to find one to do your groceries at.

9. Harris Teeter

Next on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is Harris Teeter. Every Thursday, people 60 or older can ask for an extra 5% discount after all other coupons have been applied. The promotion applies to most items and is available in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, and Delaware.

You need a VIC card, which provides access to discounts you can use in the store. The promotion doesn’t apply to gift cards, tickets, pharmacy purchases, or gas.

10. Hy Vee

No. 10 on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is Hy Vee. This Midwestern chain offers a 5% discount to people 55 and older every Wednesday.

Although their website mentions that some restrictions apply, it doesn’t share any details on those restrictions. This being said, if you have any questions related to the promotion, talk to the staff at your local store.

The discount is available in South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

11. New Seasons Market

Next on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is New Seasons Market. This West Coast chain offers a 10% discount on most items for those 65 and older every Wednesday. The promotion is available in California, Oregon, and Washington.

Check with the staff at your local New Seasons Market store to find out more details about any restrictions.

12. Piggly Wiggly

Last but not least on our list of grocery stores that offer senior discounts is Piggly Wiggly. There are many Piggly Wiggly stores across the country, but you have to know that not all of them offer deals for seniors.

If you’re 60 or older, you can get 5% off on most items every Wednesday. The promotion is available in Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
